15 Aug 2003 | Urinary tract infections and sex

Can a urinary tract infection be spread through sex? Or can sex make it worse? I must know soon, thanks!

-Female age 18

Matt B responds:

Urinary tract infections or UTIs can indeed be spread through sex or sexual play. They are initially caused by bacteria that spreads from the rectum to the vagina or penis, where it moves up the urinary tract and into the bladder. An infected person can then infect their partner if they have sex or sex play. This can happen in a number of obvious ways, but also seemingly innocent ways too.

13 Aug 2003 | Oral sex with herpes

My friend wants to perform oral sex on a guy but she is really embarassed because she has Herpes. She doesn't want to give him her Herpes though. She got it drinking from someone else's water bottle, so it was not sexually transmitted. Without there being any sores or open sores in her mouth, can she still give a guy oral sex without giving him Herpes?

-Female age 19

Matt B responds:

For this question, I refer you to our Genital Herpes guide.

Herpes isn't curable, but it goes through stages of recession and outbreak. During outbreak, sores are often visible in the mouth and/or genital area, but they need not be visible for an outbreak to be occurring. My advice is to seek treatment from a doctor, and get it controlled. Then, your friend can possibly perform oral sex on someone without infecting them. There are also special condoms for oral sex which fit over the tongue and lips. Saran wrap also works well. These are just some suggestions.
